Janet "Jan" Swett Obituary

Janet “Jan” Swett, age 72, of Stanford, Kentucky, passed peacefully on the morning of Friday, July 10, 2020 at her residence.  Born Tuesday, March 2, 1948 in Grayson, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Mary Faye Haney Sweeney of Grayson and the late Henderson “Tom” Sweeney.  Jan attended Prichard Elementary School and graduated from Prichard High School and Attended Ashland Community College & the University of Maryland.  As a young child, Jan was baptized through her local church.  In recent years, Jan rededicated her life at Crab Orchard Baptist Church. 

After graduating high school, Jan worked for Miller Insurance in Grayson for several years.  Following that position, Jan worked as a secretary for an FBI Agent Washington, DC.  From there, Jan married Robert D. “Bob” Swett, on Saturday, May 11, 1974.  On Saturday, December 22, 1984, Jan gave birth to their only child, Melissa Faye Swett.  While in Maine, Jan & Bob were successful business owners for 40 years, until their retirement. 

Jan was an active member in local community.  While in Maine, Jan successfully served as Co-Chair of the Harrison 2000 Celebration, where 1,500 citizens enjoyed.  While her daughter, Melissa attended school, Jan was active in the school’s PTO, and other school-related activities, and also served as the assistant Girl Scout Leader.  After moving to Kentucky, in 2008, Jan was an instrumental part of the Community Arts Center in Stanford.  She also served on the Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital Auxiliary. 

One of Jan’s passions, was to serve her community through Lions Club International.  Jan joined the Harrison, Maine Lions Club (District 41L) Saturday, June 1, 2002.  While in Maine, Jan served as Region Chairperson, Peace Poster Chairperson, and Speak Out Chairperson, a public speaking competition for teenagers.  After moving to Kentucky, Jan joined the Stanford Lions Club, where she served two terms as Club President (2010-2012), Club Secretary (2013-2016), District Cabinet Secretary for five years (2012-2017), District Governor (2011-2012), and President of Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation (KLEF) (2016-2017).  Currently, Jan served as Trustee for the KLEF, Stanford Lions Club Assistant Secretary, MD 43 Global Service Team (GST), 1st Vice President of the Past District Governors Association, and was a Guiding Lion.  Throughout the years, Lion Jan taught many classes on how to be a successful officer in your club and district.  Lions from all across the state would contact Lion Jan for guidance; she truly inspired and served as a mentor to many new Lions throughout her years of service. 

Being successful in so many positions awarded Jan some very deserving honors.  Jan was Lion of the Year in District 41L (twice), a Melvin Jones Fellow (2004), Kentucky Colonel (2010), KLEF Life Patron (2011), Lions International President Leadership Medal (2014-2015), Finis Davis Fellow (2016), Lions International President Medal (2016-2017), Kentucky Lions Hall of Fame Inductee (2017-2018), Outstanding Board Leadership Award from the Kentucky Non-Profit Network (2019), five Lions International President Certificates, and many other club and district Lions Club awards throughout the years.  Also, Jan & Bob were named Citizens of the Year (twice) in Harrison, Maine. 

In her spare time, Jan enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling, and playing card games.

In addition to her husband and mother, Jan leaves behind one daughter, Melissa “Missy” Swett of Stanford; one granddaughter, Gracie Swett of Stanford; one sister, Mary Jo Mosier of Olive Hill, Kentucky; special cousins, Tim Prichard (Debbie) of Grayson, Kentucky, Tony Prichard (Linda) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Jackie Arnett (Edmond) of Nashville, Tennessee; brother-in laws, Charlie Swett (Rosie) of Florida, Terry Swett (Sandy) of North Bridgeton, Maine; sister-in-law’s, Sally Smith (Tom) of Saco, Maine, Linda Cox of Gray, Maine, and Laurel Hoyt (Perry) of Hayes, North Carolina; and special friends, Iris White of Harrison, Maine, and John David, Mary, Jesse, Reese & Logan Friend of Stanford.

A Public Visitation will be held 5-9PM Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at Fox & Friend Funeral Home, 312 West Main Street, Stanford, KY 40484. 

A Private Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at the funeral home.  The Private Funeral Service will be live streamed on Fox & Friend Funeral Home Facebook page at 11:00AM Wednesday.

A Public Graveside Service will be held at approximately 12:30PM Wednesday at Buffalo Springs Cemetery, KY Hwy 78, Stanford, Kentucky. 

John David Friend, Bro. Kerry Jones, and Terry Swett will officiate the service.  Craig Johnson, Donnie Mosier, Tim Prichard, Tony Prichard, Mac Ferguson, Terry Swett, and John David Friend will serve as Active Pallbearers.  The Stanford Lions Club and the Lions of Kentucky will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. 

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions suggested to the Stanford Lions Club, PO Box 143, Stanford, KY  40484.
